It's a girl!

So we opened the envelope on Sunday, November 2! For those of you who haven't heard, when we had our 20 week ultrasound, we had the doctor determine the gender but not tell us and instead write it down on a piece of paper and put it an an envelope. She sealed the envelope and we brought it home with us where it stayed on our bulletin board for 5 weeks!

I'm not sure exactly what the deciding factor was, but we finally decided to open it and we are so glad we did because we were so surprised! (For some reason, we both "intuitively" thought that we were having a boy!)

We went on a hike (my favorite time to hike in the redwoods is after a good rain, which we definitely got that weekend!) and opened it there. We took a little video and lots of pictures to document the occasion.

8-week ultrasound

I forgot to post this ultrasound picture from our 8-week appointment on June 18. He's a pretty cute little guy, isn't he?

Wharf to Wharf

Juan and I walked the Wharf to Wharf today. It's a great race in Santa Cruz County every year that goes from the Santa Cruz Wharf to the Capitola Wharf (thus the name "Wharf to Wharf"). It's actually an incredible event because there are about 15,000 participants. It was cool and foggy and just great weather for doing an event like this. I got a few fun pictures, too.

We walked the Wharf to Wharf in 2005, but both Juan and I have improved our fitness significantly since that time, so this was a great experience for us. We walked about 16 minute miles, which is faster than we were walking when we did the Nike Women's 1/2 Marathon in 2005 and also is good because the rather small roads are super-crowded with so many people doing the event.

While we walked today, we talked about doing the Wharf to Wharf again next year...only next year, we'll be pushing a stroller!

1 month ago today

It's been one month today since the day we found out we were expecting! It's gone by fast - will the next 7 months go by this fast...or faster?

Pregnant in Orlando

Today I flew from San Jose to Orlando to attend the International Christian Retail Show, hosted by the Christian Bookseller's Association. I'm excited about some of the training I'll get to do at the show, but I'm not excited about being away from Juan for 5 nights. It's weird – for the first time when we found out I am pregnant almost 4 weeks ago – to be away from the person I'm sharing this experience with.

After several weeks of maintaining my weight, I've begun to gain a few pound over the last few days. Specifically, I was floating between 193-195 (192.8 was most lowest weight in recent years – just a few days before I found out I was pregnant), but this week, I saw 197 on the scale. Yikes! I'm hoping to only gain about 15-20 pounds during this pregnancy, so I want to be careful not to gain too quickly. I think that I am exercising enough, but eating right has been more difficult. I am not having “morning sickness,” per se, but I am feeling somewhat nauseous most days. When this happens, it's easy to eat to make the nausea go away. I just need to eat the right things! It's also easy to let down my guard in general and eat more just because I'm pregnant. This will be my challenge for the next 7 months, so now is a good time to focus on making healthy choices!

Post-Fitness Ridge Update

So my plan was to start posting weekly weigh-ins after I got home from Fitness Ridge and to keep tracking my weight on the blog and writing about the continuation of my weight-loss journey. After a busy couple of weeks with work, I was just about to begin doing this 2 weeks after I got home from Fitness Ridge, around June 17, which just so happened to be the day Juan and I took this picture of ourselves:

I'm not sure if you can see exactly what's in Juan's hand but you are probably thinking it might be what it is: a home pregnancy test with a positive reading! Those two pink lines have changed our world.

The best way to describe this news for us is that it was unexpected but welcome! We are at a great time in our lives to be having kids, and we have been focusing on our health for the last year for just this reason. We are thrilled and excited, even though it still seems very surreal.

It's still so new - in fact, I'm just at 7 weeks (we just happened to find out about as early as you can that I was pregnant) and we know that many people don't announce their pregnancies until at least 10 weeks (when the risk of miscarriage goes down significantly). But we've decided to let our friends and family know earlier because we just can't keep it in! And if something bad were to happen, we would want to have the love and support of our family and friends. I still haven't even been to the doctor - but I have an appointment scheduled for July 10. We can't wait to talk to the doctor. It seems like it will make it a lot more "official."

Now, with all this said, I've decided that I'm not giving up on my health, fitness and weight loss journey or blogging. In fact, it's really just as important (if not more important) now to focus on these things.

In talking to my regular doctor (I just happened to have an appointment the day after we took the drugstore test) and doing quite a bit of reading online, I've found that I can continue to exercise well into my pregnancy - and that I don't need to "eat for two." So I'm planning to do just that - to exercise, count calories, and continue my journey - just keeping in mind that there's a new little guy along for the ride. Of course, I'll have to adjust my calories as well as my exercise just a bit, but it's clearly no reason to stop.

Now about that weigh-in. Since getting home from Fitness Ridge and finding out the pregnancy news, I've fluctuated from 192-194. My hope is to start posting here once a week with my weigh-ins as well as my thoughts and some pictures along the way.

I think we're in for quite a ride. Glad all of you are on it with me.

Jeremy and Angie's Wedding Reception at Crow's Nest

Last weekend Juan and I went to the wedding reception of our good friends Jeremy and Angie. It was a really fun time-and a fun chance to dress up, so I thought I'd post a couple of pictures.

Back Home

Well, I've been back home for over 3 days now and my time at Fitness Ridge is becoming more and more of a memory. It's been good to talk with people here at home and process what I learned on my trip.

Here's a list I started putting together at Fitness Ridge and finished at home:

Things I learned (or realized) at Fitness Ridge:

1. I knew much more than I thought I did about exercise. I was very well prepared for all the exercise experiences I had.

2. There are many, many things you can do with tofu.

3. Tai Chi is probably not for me.

4. I really can exercise more than once a day - actually way more than once a day!

5. It really IS easier to eat healthy when someone else is making the food and determining the portion sizes - but that doesn't mean it's impossible to do on my own, in real life.

6. It is amazing what the human body can do. More specifically, it is amazing what my body did this last week.

7. Exercise does decrease appetite.

8. I like stretching...a lot!

9. In general, the more difficult the hike, the more beautiful the scenery. Challenging yourselves on hikes is well worth it.

10. This is just the beginning...it really is a going to be a lifelong commitment.

Departure Stats

Sunday was "test-out" day. I had my appointment at 7:10 and got weighed and measured, and here are my results. (Hint: I'm pleased...)

Weight: 195.5 (6 pound loss)
Body Fat %: 32.2 (4.4% loss)
BMI: 31.6 (.9 loss)

It's easy to consider these numbers a success (and they are), but the true test of success will be the changes I implement (as well as my "numbers") when I get home.

Sunday - Departure Day

Here are a couple of pictures from departure day...after these photos the shuttle picked me up and I headed home!

Here's a shot from out in front of the facility. Everything you see is what is there. The building on the left is the sleeping rooms and the building on the right houses the front desk, offices, spa rooms, dining room and kitchen, pool (out back), gym, and aerobics studio.

Thoughts on Friday

Well, since I posted a lot of pictures last night, I thought I might try to get a bit of writing in today. I only have a few minutes before lunch, but here are the things I have been thinking about today:

1. I feel really good. My body (and even my mind) are exhausted, but I have experienced a really good feeling in my body from all this exercise. Obviously people can't exercise like this all the time, but it has really given me a new desire (in my mind and body) for exercise. I would say I've certainly had that desire before, but now I feel it even stronger.

2. I must take the things I've learned here home with me. It is so easy to not exercise and to overeat - and this would be easy to do. The real value in this trip will be what I implement when I get home.

Ok, that's all my mind can get into words now - and I've got to head to lunch!

I can't wait to get home and tell you all in person about this trip.

Fitness Ridge Food

Here are some pictures of some of the food at Fitness Ridge. Now, I happened to take these on a night when the presentation of the food was a bit more "gourmet" than other nights. That said, I have really like all the food.

These strawberries were SO good - dark chocolate and 140 calories for both!

Thoughts on Wednesday

I know that I have been putting a lot of information on here (the daily schedules as well as the hike pictures), but I want to include a bit more – maybe a bit of what my experience has been like here – and maybe a bit of the emotional side of being here.

First of all, so far the experience has been great! I am just at the right fitness level for a program like this. Strong enough that I can really enjoy it and not be totally miserable from the workouts, but also at a point where I have a good amount of room for improvement.

I've spent parts of each day tired – but the funny thing is that the kind of tired changes within a day – from tired muscles to exhausted tired to just plain sleepy tired. Most of all, I've felt slightly sore and sleepy tired. But in some ironic way, I also feel energetic. For example, right now it's about 9:20, I don't have anything I need to do, but I'm not quite ready to go to bed – and I have to get up at 5:45 for a 2.5 hour hike!

I've also felt a tiny bit “brain dead” - maybe that's not quite the right word – but it hasn't been a terribly emotional week for me. Maybe it's just that I'm on autopilot going from class to class and getting ready (bandaids on for hikes, sunscreen and bathing suit on for pool class, clean clothes on when you're finished working out, etc.) for classes.

The people I've met here cover a pretty wide spectrum. In age they range from early 20s to 60s, and most range from slightly overweight to obese. Most actually do have a moderate amount of weight to lose. What I've found most interesting is how long some people are staying. There is a girl who just finished college and is staying here 6 weeks before starting a job she already has. There's another who is here for 8 weeks, who is coming out of a depression and giving herself this time to really change some things in here life. I'm amazed at the everyday, normal folks who are here for 2 or 3 or 4 weeks – who just took vacation from their jobs and made it happen. Interesting, eh?

In case you're wondering about the food, I think the food here is really good. It's light and healthy and seems like enough, but definitely not too much. I definitely have felt hungry, but not in a way that makes me frustrated. Usually when I get hungry it's either time for a class or a meal or bed. We eat 1200 calories a day (300 at breakfast, 400 at lunch, and 500 at dinner). Included in the 1200 is a piece of fruit to take on our hikes. We also get dessert with dinner, and they have been really good. All of the food is dairy-free, and white sugar and white flour-free. They use fructose and agave nectar to sweeten some of the desserts and all breads and desserts use whole wheat flour. And they use lots of tofu! The meals are served pre-portioned and they are very strict about the portion sizes. There was a girl sitting by me tonight who is celebrating her 40th birthday today. We had chocolate-covered strawberries for dessert (2) and they were VERY good, and she asked for one more (since it was her birthday). Cody, our 18 or so year old server said that unfortunately he couldn't give her another one. I joked that he might lose his job if he did (in all actuality I knew they were probably very serious about this), and he said that yes, that was true...he could probably actually lose his job for doing that. Crazy – but I see the logic.

This post has been a bit scattered, but I hope you enjoyed reading it. Off to bed and I'll write more tomorrow...

Pictures from Wednesday's Hike

Today's hike was called Red, White and Blue - for the red rocks, white rocks and blue skies. Somehow I got talked into going with the advancedI think it was about 4 miles and took us about 2 hours. It was a good hike with lots of steep inclines and LOTS of sand.
